Program Notes

I composed this piece between 2002 – 03 and later revised it in 2018. The title reflects the improvisatory nature of the piece, very similar to an impromptu. The piece is based on the opening arpeggiated figure which initially sounds dark and foreboding, and later reveals a kaleidoscope of energetic colors and melodic lines.

This is one of my earliest works for solo piano, and it is also one of my favorites.
